Tangled Nocturnes for Violin and Viola | Peter Askim

Tangled Nocturnes for Violin and Viola

Instrumentation: Violin and Viola; Duration: 7’45”

Program Notes:

Tangled Nocturnes for Violin and Viola was commissioned by Steven Schiff as an anniversary gift to his wife, Eleanor Schiff. The music explores the relationship between two distinct voices, each with their own personality, that exist in close proximity, often inhabiting the same musical space. The two lines often become closely intertwined, each voice becoming indistinguishable from the other. At other times, the two diverge: at times supportive and at times in conflict with one another. The music celebrates the wonderful complexity, rich emotional landscapes and ultimately great beauty of human relationships.
